An exhibition of thirty-nine works by Albert on a disused floor of the Royal College of Psychiatrists.&nbsp; For many years, Albert has made drawings at Bethlem Gallery, at the Bethlem Royal Hospital.&nbsp; The exhibition included four sketchbooks, 14 drawings on A1 paper, and 21 drawings on A4/A3. I displayed and framed the drawings in specimen trays previously used to store artefacts at the Museum of London.&nbsp; Pre-existing furniture in the space from its time as an office was used throughout.&nbsp;A text to accompany the exhibition is available here. The works are tracings of texts taken from the College’s antiquarian library and archive. The project considers who psychiatrists are meant to be, what they are meant to value, and what they are meant to do. It also considers how some of these characteristics have remained remarkably consistent over time, while others have morphed in response to social and professional needs. Finally, it provides some insight into the evolution of professions and work more broadly in society, touching on our shared understanding of competence, responsibility, blame, expertise, regulation, bureaucracy, hierarchy and teamwork.The works are pencil and carbon transfer on paper, behind museum glass, in limed and graphite-coated oak frames I have made. The exhibition also includes one watercolour theorem painting on paper from the early nineteenth century, which is framed in a similar manner. With the exception of this nineteenth-century work, each work also has an accompanying disclaimer to its right, which is a printed document in a limed oak frame.&nbsp; Accompanying the project are a&nbsp;map and list of references, and a conversation with Dr Alan Baban, a writer, psychiatrist and psychoanalytic psychotherapist. A speaker plays a selection of guidelines from the Department of Health’s ‘Health Building Note 03-01’ for Adult Acute Mental Health Units. Key features of the psychiatric profession are often embedded in these guidelines and environments, including principles of care, safety and comfort, but also risk management, security and surveillance. There is often a carefully controlled balance of the domestic and the clinical. Four photographs found in my father’s storage documenting a range of unknown domestic interiors taken while looking for a flat to rent in London are mounted in polystyrene frames on the walls.
